Acute Medicine is “general internal medicine at the front door”. The Acute Medicine department is based on the Acute Medical Floor, above the Emergency Department in Chancellor Wing, at St James's University Hospital.
The focus is on rapid assessment of acutely ill medical patients and early senior review. Following assessment and/or treatment, patients are either discharged from the Acute Medical Floor, or transferred to a specialty bed. Acute Medicine is also involved in a number of ambulatory pathways for various conditions as an alternative to hospital admission.
