At the Leeds Major Trauma Centre we look after any person who has suffered major trauma within West Yorkshire for adults and Yorkshire and Humberside for children. If you or a loved one has recently suffered a major trauma we hope these pages will provide you with some information to help.

What is major trauma?

Major trauma means to suffer a life changing injury or multiple serious injuries that could cause death or serious disability. This could include people who have been in a high-speed vehicle crash, industrial accident, high fall, explosion or severe knife or gunshot wounds. Although these sorts of injuries are rare, severe major trauma remains the leading cause of death in people under the age of 30. Trauma patients occupy more hospital beds than all patients with heart diseases and four times more than patients with cancer.

Major trauma patients often suffer complex, multiple injuries that need surgical and nursing care from multiple specialists and care from many professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. This care is very important and many patients need a personalised rehabilitation programme taking many months to help them return to an active life.
