Background and history
Seacroft Hospital was opened in 1904 as an infectious diseases hospital for the city. This early history explains the vast size of the site and its rather curious layout, with wards located well away from each other.
Its tall brick water tower is one of the best-known landmarks of East Leeds.
Seacroft Hospital currently provides an integrated acute and elderly medicine services, predominantly serving the eastern half of Leeds. It also has a number of other facilities, including renal dialysis, on site.
It also now home to the internationally-renowed head injuries rehabilitation unit previously based at Chapel Allerton Hospital.
Building work is currently underway to create the largest Reproductive Medicine Unit in the NHS. This will open in 2010 and replace existing smaller units based at Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s.
