Support Services and Complementary Therapies

Chaplaincy

The Chaplains help provide spiritual, religious and pastoral care to everyone in the hospital: patients, relatives and staff. Messages for the Chaplains can be left at the Faith Centre, or by calling 0113 206 4365.

The Chaplaincy also provides a 24 hour/7 day a week “on-call” service. If needed more urgently, this service can be accessed through a member of staff. The Chaplaincy Team is made up of chaplains from different denominations Church of England, Roman Catholic, Free Church (Methodist, Baptist etc) and also from different faith groups Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist. The Chaplains are available to everyone - of whatever faith or belief. They try to meet people openly, without prejudice and in confidence, to give time and a listening ear.

The Chaplaincy base in the Bexley Wing is located in the Faith Centre which is located on Level 1. It is open 24 hours a day. There is a Multi-Faith Prayer Room where regular services are held. Details of services can be found on the notice board in the Faith Centre and around the Bexley wing. There is also a Quiet Room, Counselling Room, washing/ ablution facilities and Chaplain's office. Natural Healing and Relaxation

There is a natural healer, Ruth Kaye, who can help patients with meditation using breathing exercises. There is no conflict with religious beliefs. This service can be accessed on Level 1 in the Complementary Therapy Room.

Ruth Kaye has been offering this service for twenty years in The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS and in addition to individual sessions offers group relaxation on Friday morning in the Faith Centre at 11.00 am , the second Saturday morning at the Britannia Hotel, Bramhope and the last Saturday morning each month at The Cairn Hotel Harrogate at 11.00 am. The sessions out of hospital environment are at the request of patients so choice is offered.

Ruth provides her own cds and patients have documented relief from anxiety, ability to sleep, positivity and confidence, and the sessions also help with needle phobia, anticipatory sickness and relief from pain. No promises are ever made and meditation with music can be practised at home so there is the ability to self-empower .Ruth has been a healing practitioner for over thirty years and is an ex-Samaritan.
