The Clinical Nurse Specialists have a wide knowledge and experience of children’s nursing, which includes children born with cleft lip and/or palate.
Their role is to provide specialist information, advice and support to parents/carers and children throughout their cleft treatment pathway. The nurses’ role may begin in the antenatal period following diagnosis at ultrasound scan, or at birth where they aim to visit newborn infants within 24 hours of referral to the team. The nurses manage feeding and monitor growth of the infant, and provide care and support before and after operations.
