Insulin & Mixtures - Page 2

 

Mixtures

There are lots of different insulin mixtures made mostly by 2 main companies.  They are mostly mixtures of soluble and longer acting insulin.  Always remember to rotate or tip the insulin 20 times to mix properly before use.

 

(1) Novo Nordisk Insulins:

Can be given using a syringe, NovoPen 3, (Classic, Fun or Demi), NovoPen Junior, Innovo, Innolet or Flexipens.  The PenMate can also be used with all NovoPens.

 
Mixtard 10: 10% clear 90% cloudy
Mixtard 20: 20% clear 80% cloudy
Mixtard 30: 30% clear 70% cloudy
Mixtard 40: 40% clear 60% cloudy
Mixtard 50: 50% clear 50% cloudy

This company also makes:

NovoRapid: 100% clear, very fast acting  
NovoMix 30 30% clear, very fast acting 70% cloudy
Detemir   100% basal analogue insulin

 

(2) Eli Lilly Insulins:

Can be given using a syringe, Humapen, Autopen or a pre-filled disposable pen.

Humulin S: 100% clear  
Humulin 1:   100% cloudy

Humulin M2:

20% clear 80% cloudy
Humulin M3: 30% clear 70% cloudy
Humulin M5: 50% clear 50% cloudy

This company also makes:

Humalog Lispro: 100% clear, very fast acting  
Humalog Mix 25: 25% clear, very fast acting 75% cloudy
Humalog Mix 50: 50% clear, very fast acting 50% cloudy
Choosing the correct injection device and insulin is very important for good control and you can get more help, information and advice from your diabetes care team.

 

(3) Aventis Insulin:

Can be given using Autopen24, Optipen or Optiset.

Glargine:   100% basal analogue insulin
