Research & Development

The United Kingdom has an outstanding record of scientific innovation. In health, it rests on mutual support between the NHS, Universities and bodies that fund high quality research and development (R&D).

R&D is essential for the advancement of health care and wealth creation through the development of intellectual property. The Trust is committed to:

  • playing a leading role in NHS R&D
  • encouraging staff to pursue high quality, ethical and relevant R&D
  • the pursuit of evidence-based clinical practice and management, in a research-aware environment

Clinical research has taken place at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust for many years across a range of health care settings. Thanks to the hard work and commitment of clinicians and dedicated research staff, latest figures show we have the highest recruitment of patients into clinical trials of any trust in England.

The Trust recognises that its research portfolio should be inclusive and representative of the population it serves in terms of ethnic and other minority groups. The Trust also plays a supporting role in basic science R&D, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, particularly where such activity is likely to inform new clinical technologies within three to five years.

Our World class research - currently focused around five core strengths

In addition to the above five core strengths, there is also information about the nationally funded cancer and stroke research networks that are working with LTHT to fund researchers and support to set up and the running of clinical trial sin the Trust.

Review of programmes

The quality of activity in each of these areas will be reviewed regularly, using a variety of metrics, including peer-reviewed publications, external grant income, the existence of formal partnership agreements, development of research capacity, a good governance and programme review by external agencies.

Each Directorate in the Trust has at least one nominated research lead who takes responsibility for research within their area. Where a Directorate has not yet identified a research lead the clinical director acts as the lead for research.
