Cancer Research UK visits Leeds Cancer Centre

On Friday (10th Jan 2020) Michelle Mitchell, the Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK (CRUK), Alex Pemberton, Head of Therapeutic Discovery and four of their trustees visited the radiotherapy department in the Leeds Cancer Centre at Bexley Wing las part a visit to Leeds.

CRUK were welcomed by Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust Chief Executive, Julian Hartley and Chief Medical Officer, Yvette Oade and heard about the Trust’s commitment to the best cancer research in Leeds, its strong research partnership with the University of Leeds and the recent success in the award of a CRUK-funded Centre of Excellence for Radiotherapy Research in Leeds.

The CRUK Centre will be led by Professor David Sebag-Montefiore, experts from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Leeds the charity investing £3.5 million over the next five years to fund advances in radiotherapy research, including the use of artificial intelligence with imaging technology.

Leeds was chosen to be one of just seven Centres of Excellence in a UK-wide network, RadNet, that will accelerate advances in radiotherapy research. Other centres include Manchester, Cambridge, Oxford, Glasgow and London.
