Head and Neck Local Support Team

The Leeds Macmillan Head & Neck Local Support is a team that supports patients when they have completed treatment for head and neck cancer.

The team comprises of:

Gail Pettinger and Marie Mahoney (Specialist Head & Neck Nurses)

Jennifer Carne (Speech & Language Therapist)

Michelle Waldie (Dietician)

Nikki Mulvihill (Cancer Care Coordinator)

The team works closely with the Head & Neck Multidisciplinary Team.

Once treatment has finished, patients are offered an appointment with the team usually within 2 weeks of treatment completing. The appointment is at Bexley Wing, St James Hospital.

Each appointment lasts approximately 1 hour and is tailored to the individual needs of the patient. Points of discussion might include:

  •  Pain
  •  Mouth care
  •  Eating and drinking
  •  Nutrition and weight
  •  Communication
  •  Fatigue
  •  Medications
  •  Concerns/worries/questions about treatment
  •  Emotional impact of treatment

There is no time limit on the amount of appointments each person is offered, it is based on need. The team will provide support as and when is needed.

The team provides a Post Treatment Education Programme which spans over a 3 week period, one session per week. The purpose is to answer questions and allow patients to meet each other for support.

There is also a survivorship group called 'Facing Forward'. The group meets once a month, the second Thursday of the month 1.30-3pm at the Robert Ogden Centre. All patients and their families are welcome.
