Praise for epilepsy surgery team
21 September 2017
Earlier this year, our epilepsy surgery team (pictured) received a wonderful email, thanking them for the life changing care they have provided to a patient.
In the email, the patient wrote: “I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2004 with the root cause being a cavernoma in my right temporal lobe. I had seen many specialists in and around Leeds, mostly as a private patient and I wish I had come to your team sooner.
I was referred by my GP to see your neurologist Dr Mellissa Maguire. She was fantastic, for a few years we tried various medications to try and stop my seizures but unfortunately it could not be done. She referred me to her colleague Mr Sivakumar, a surgeon, to talk and consider surgery.
From the first day I saw Mr Sivakumar I felt so inspired and gained trust in him immediately. He took the time to talk about things and gave me time to think about it. I decided to give it a go and had brain surgery and to date this was the best decision of my life, I am now 127 days seizure free and counting.
This could not have happened without your professional, knowledgeable, dedicated and caring team who gave me their own personal touch to help me through this difficult and nerve wrecking time. This includes your administrative team, the epilepsy nurses and Mr Sivakumar’s PA – Sarah Watson who I spoke to often.
From the day I decided to have the operation to the date of the surgery only took 9 months and this included all the time it had taken to have all the necessary tests etc. WOW, that is fantastic, I thought it would take years! They were always efficient and never ever ran late for any of the appointments I had with both of them.
They have changed my life for the better and I am now able to exercise which is something I love and will be able to drive in the near future and live my life to the fullest.
Many people complain about the NHS, but they are crazy! They don’t know how lucky they are and I will fight your corner for the rest of my life!”
