Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) - CSF

Clinical indication for requesting: investigation and monitoring of neurosarcoidosis. CSF ACE activity lacks specificity as a diagnostic marker for neurosarcoidosis as it may be raised in other CNS conditions such as bacterial infections and neoplasia as well as other inflammatory disorders including multiple sclerosis, encephalitis and vasculitis. An absence of CSF ACE activity cannot be used to rule out a diagnosis of neurosarcoidosis.
