Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
Test not routinely available without discussion with the Duty Biocohemist (x26922 option 2). Vitamin B2 is a water-soluble vitamin. The predominant form, FAD, is found in red blood cells and has important functions in energy production and as and anti-oxidant. Deficiency usually occurs in association with other vitamin deficiencies. Clinical indication for requesting: symptoms suggestive of B2 deficiency (sore tongue, throat, lips, normocytic normochromic anaemia, dermatitis), malabsorption, renal dialysis, alcoholism.

| Additional Information | Please contact the lab (x26922 option 2) to discuss before sending the sample. Fasting sample preferred, or 8h post oral supplementation or TPN. Gel tubes cannot be used. EDTA samples also acceptable. Sample must be protected from light e.g. wrap in foil. |

| Collection Con | PROTECT SAMPLE FROM LIGHT. Instructions to lab: Lithium heparin (no gel) or EDTA tube. Gel tubes not suitable. If sample can be sent to arrive in Glasgow within 72h of collection, store whole blood (ambient) and send whole blood, minimum 1 mL. Otherwise, centrifuge, remove plasma and buffy coat and freeze packed red cells at -20, mimumum 400 uL. When booking in, please note whether sample was protected from light in specimen comment. |
