PEMPHIGUS : Autoantibodies directed against desmogleins on the cell surface of epidermal keratinocytes. BULLOUS PEMPHIGOID : Autoantibodies directed against hemidesmosomes in the basement membrane. Both are always tested.

Additional Information Immunofluorescence of a skin biopsy should also be performed (by Histopathology) as both assays can give false negative results. 70-90% of patients with Pemphigus Vulgaris/ Bullous Pemphigoid have antibodies. Antibody levels may correlate with disease activity for Pemphigus only
