Tryptase (Mast Cell)

Anaphylactic reactions (IgE dependant or non-IgE dependant) are mediated by the release of vasoactive mediators, including tryptase, from mast cells and circulating basophils. Serial measurements of Tryptase are made to determine if a mast cell-mediated reaction to the anaesthetic is evident and the investigation of anaphylactic reactions requires 3 serial samples (see collection conditions).

Additional Information | Tryptase levels usually peak within an hour and has an in vivo half-life of 2.5 hours, returning to normal within 12-24 hours after release. Plasma tryptase can be elevated in systemic mastocytosis. Here levels tend to be constantly raised. Mastocytosis is a rare disorder. The presence of systemic mast cell degranulation is evidenced by an increase in serum tryptase however tryptase levels are persistently elevated in mastocytosis therefore random measurements are difficult to interpret.
