A variety of samples such as tissues, biopsies, hydatid cyst and pus from abscesses, CSF, bile, duodenal/jejunal aspirates, sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage can be examined for parasites. Suspected whole worms or segments of Tapeworm may also be submitted for identification

Additional Information It is important to include sufficient clinical details and travel history with the submitted sample. This will not only aid in the diagnosis of parasites but will also protect the laboratory staff if a hazardous pathogen is suspected or indicated from the clinical information supplied
If a worm or segment is reported as Taenia (Tapeworm) then this sample will be referred to the reference laboratory for speciation to differentiate between T.solium (Pork Tapeworm) or T.saginata(Beef Tapeworm)

Collection Con Submit whole collection of fluid in a sterile universal container Tissue/ biopsies; if specimen is small, place it in sterile water to prevent desiccation. If processing is delayed, refrigeration is preferable to storage at ambient temperature. Delays of over 48 hours are undesirable.
