Neonatal infections are classified as occuring before an infant is 3 months old. Infections may be contracted from transplacental transfer, perinatally during delivery or by other means after birth. There are a number of viral agents that are implicated in neonatal infection; Herpes simplex virus (HSV), Adenovirus, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), Varicella zoster virus (VZV) and enterovirus

Tube EDTA samples are required. Faeces samples may be tested for the presence of enterovirus only.

Additional Information Multiplex PCR testing is carried out to detect viral targets. Full clinical details should be given to enable appropriate testing.
