Glitter and Glamour at the Ready as 2021 Makes way for Strictly NHS…

2 June 2021

This Friday, the inaugural 'Strictly NHS' will see 12 NHS employees swapping their scrubs and lanyards for sequins and sparkle as they compete in a dancehall competition at the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool.

The event partners with NHS charity, Blue Skies, to achieve a fundraising target of £10,000 (already met) for our beloved NHS. Each contestant will train with a professional dancer for six weeks before performing together Strictly Style in front of an audience and judges later this year.

Strictly 1From Leeds Teaching Hospitals, five members of staff will be competing on the floor to be crowned Strictly NHS Champion - Karen Sykes, Nilam Jadav-Patel, Andrew Viggars, Adam Wilson and Lauren Pickup.

The competition is the brain child of Crown Ballroom owner, Alison Slinger. "It came to me one morning over a bacon butty, I was thinking about all the incredible work the NHS do for us every day and how wonderful it would be to make some dreams come true," Alison says.

"Once I started talking to associates about the possibility of Strictly NHS the idea grew, and we now have a full-scale event with an incredibly worthy cause at the heart of it," she added.

Costume company, DSI who supply the sparkling costumes for the BBC show, are also showing their support by getting involved and supplying the costumes to the 12 lucky finalists. They will ensure that the transformation from NHS employee to dance floor hero is complete.

The competition had an incredible 2,000 entries which were shortlisted to 100 who were required to submit a one minute ‘audition tape’, from these the lucky 12 finalist were selected. The finalists are from all over the UK and include a range of NHS employees from an Oncology doctor, a midwife, a mental health nurse and non-clinical staff such as a department secretary and PA. Independent of job titles, the 12 finalists make a difference to the running of our very necessary institute, the NHS. They in turn will experience a life changing event and the chance to return to their hospitals/office as the champion of the very first Strictly NHS.

Strictly NHS takes place on Friday 4 June
