Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service

Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service provides support and psychological therapies for common mental health problems, such as:

  • Stress and anxiety.
  • Low moods and depression.
  • Panic disorder.
  • Specific phobias.
  • Social Phobia.
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
  • Health Anxiety.
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
  • Bulimia (mild).
  • Binge eating disorder.
  • Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).
  • Body dysmorphic disorder

How can I access this service?

If you are over 17 years of age, registered with a Leeds GP and experiencing one or more of the mental health difficulties mentioned above, you can self-refer on the service website. A number of questions will pop-up - these are to make sure you are being directed to the right service. You don't need to see your GP to access this service although your GP will be updated about your treatment.

What kinds of a support does the service offer?

Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service can offer workshops, group classes, a range of online support options and face-to-face sessions. The service follows the 'stepped care model', which offers the lowest level intervention or treatment first. This means that you may feel much better quite quickly with a simple and short treatment. However, if your symptoms don't improve, you can then be 'stepped up' to a further treatment which may be of benefit. Find out more in the service leaflet:

What can I expect on the Stress Control class?

'Stress Control' class is a six session course offered by Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service. The course covers different topics including feeling anxious, stress, sleeping problems, depression and panic. Classes are designed to help you start to improve your wellbeing straight away. On the course you will learn:

  • About anxiety and stress and why they are such common problems.
  • New self-help tools, skills and techniques which can help you tackle anxiety and stress.
  • Ways of coping and tips to improve emotional health.

You will not have to talk in front of other people in the class or be asked to take part in group work. People attending the course will not discuss personal problems. You will be surprised by the number of people attending your course. There will be all kinds of people of different ages. You may feel relieved that you are not alone and how common stress and feeling anxious really is. You will need to put new skills into practise outside the classroom to feel the most benefit from attending the course.

If you are worried about feeling panicky you can bring someone with you and sit at the back of the room near the door. You can pop out for a breath of air at any point during a session.

The course is delivered at a number of locations across the city by qualified practitioners. Classes are available during the day or evening and run for two hours. You will need to attend all six sessions. Find out about class availability on the online bookings page.
