Welcome to Leeds Musculoskeletal Centre

Leeds Musculoskeletal Centre is internationally renowned for treatment and research and offers the highest levels of service. If you are seriously injured in a car crash and need access to world class treatment we have all you need under one roof from trauma and orthopaedics to plastic and reconstructive surgery.

We are also home to the Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit (LMBRU). Last year the Centre provided care for over 20,000 inpatients and over 111,000 outpatients.

What we do

The Leeds Musculoskeletal Centre provides the following services:

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery service

Boasting the largest microsurgical unit in the UK and an excellent international reputation, the service provides a wide range of treatments with a high degree of sub-specialisation by the consultant team. Mainly based at the LGI, services are also offered at St James’s and Chapel Allerton Hospital. It includes an ambulatory care hand unit with consultation rooms, theatres and specialist Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy all provided in adjacent rooms.

As well as general plastic surgery, the service provides the region with specialist care in breast, hand, major nerve, head and neck, craniofacial, trauma, skin and major cancer surgery. Supra-regional work includes children’s hand surgery, brachial plexus and major nerve surgery.

The majority of its services are directly bookable via the Choose and Book system to ensure rapid access to the dedicated and experienced team.

Rheumatology service

Internationally renowned for the management and investigation of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, the service has been recognised as a centre of excellence in Rheumatology by the European League against Rheumatism since 2005. The service is centrally based at Chapel Allerton Hospital but provides care across the Trust and includes some inpatient facilities at St James's Hospital.

The outpatient service at Chapel Allerton Hospital is well suited to provide a wide spectrum of rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders with its dedicated diagnostic suite including MRI and ultrasound.

In April 2008, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and University of Leeds received a prestigious multi-million pound research centre award and set up the Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit (LMBRU), in recognition of its status as a world leader in rheumatic and musculoskeletal research.

The majority of its services are directly bookable via the Choose and Book system to ensure rapid access to the dedicated and experienced team.

Trauma and Orthopaedics service

The Trauma department based at Leeds General Infirmary provides a trauma and post-trauma service, specialising in reconstruction of critical limb and head injuries. There is also a dedicated spinal injury team and a joint hand service provided with the plastic surgeons. It works very closely with both the other musculoskeletal services and also the Accident & Emergency department and Radiology.

Elective Orthopaedic care is mainly provided at Chapel Allerton Hospital in a dedicated facility call the Chapel Allerton Orthopaedic Centre and includes hip and knee, upper limb and foot and ankle service. With outpatient and theatre services on site as well as associated specialist Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy the unit was designed to provide excellent, comprehensive and rapid recovery care for our patients.
