Medical Illustration

We use diagnostic imaging and media technologies to deliver effective, safe and personal healthcare for every patient every time. We produce multimedia resources for patient information, teaching, research and innovation and create clear and consistent communication material to promote the Trust’s image as a centre of excellence locally, nationally and internationally.

What we do

Our product portfolio is spread across three distinct areas.

1. Photographic Imaging and Related Media

  • Clinical Photography – ward, theatre, studio, pathology
  • Surface Topography
  • Public Relations Photography – bulletin, annual reports, portraits
  • Clinical Video Production – ward, theatre, studio, pathology
  • Non-Clinical Video – Corporate and Teaching Video

Medical Illustration photographers and support workers provide diagnostic imaging to support patient care pathways as well as non-clinical photographic and video services, across all sites. The service receives over 5,000 requests per year and undertakes:

Clinical Photography

For use in medical records, diagnosis and treatment planning

Surface Topography

A means of measuring spine curvature in scoliosis, allowing clinicians to monitor a patient without the use of x-rays

Non-Clinical Photography

Including staff portraits, public relations, architectural, equipment and product photography.

Video

To illustrate and record clinical conditions where still images are less effective e.g. to demonstrate an increased range of hand movements after surgery. Video production is also used to deliver staff training and patient information.

Ophthalmic Imaging is the use of specialist equipment to create detailed images to support the diagnosis and treatment of a range of eye conditions.

Various common procedures carried out include;

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

A non-invasive diagnostic test which uses a low powered laser to scan and image the inner layers of the retina. OCT can help diagnose various eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, macular oedema and glaucoma.

Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) and Indocyanine Green Angiography (ICG)

A process used to detect abnormalities in the retinal and choroidal layers of the inner eye. For more information on this specific procedure please see dedicated information leaflet.

Fundus Photography

Using special cameras, ophthalmic imaging technicians are able to produce detailed photographs of the inside of the eye. This can help the diagnosis of an eye condition and keep an accurate record of any changes. Fundus photography is a non-invasive procedure, but dilation drops may have to be instilled to enlarge the pupils, this will be explained at the appointment.

Anterior Segment Photography

The outer areas of the eye may require photography to document changes and/or treatment to the eye lid, cornea, iris, lens and sclera. 

Corneal Topography and OCT

The imaging and mapping of the cornea. This can aid the clinician when diagnosing, planning, and recording conditions related to the cornea.
