
PCR detection of Parvovirus B19 as part of multiplex assay. Viral infection can cause “slapped cheek syndrome”, aplastic crisis in sickle cell disease or hereditary spherocytosis and arthralgia. Infection in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy can lead to intrauterine death and hydrops fetalis so testing is indicated for pregnant patients presenting with rash.
