Emergency Tube Change
1. Shout for help

2. Remove the tube
Cut ties and remove blocked tube

3. Insert new tube
- Lubricate tube
- Introduce tube into tracheostomy site

4. Remove Introducer
- Hold tube firmly whilst removing introducer
- Once tube is in position, secure with tapes as soon as possible

5. Breathing Look, Listen, Feel

If the child is not breathing, call 999 and follow Basic Life Support steps overleaf from step 6
Child Basic Life Support
1. Safety
2. Stimulate
Try to wake the child

3. Shout for help / ring 999
use speakerphone on mobile device

4. Airway
- Check tube for obstruction
- Suction the tube
- If tube is blocked, change tube (see overleaf)

5. Breathing Look, Listen, Feel

6. If not breathing Give 5 rescue breaths
- Give breaths into tube
- At least 2 breaths must be effective

7. If unable to pass new tube – use mouth to mouth
If no upper airway – use mouth to stoma


8. If no response Give 30 compressions to 2 breaths at 2 compressions per second
Push down 1/3 depth of chest until help arrives or child
wakes up
