Martin Williams, a 73 year old Leeds resident who is currently receiving cancer treatment at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, has used his professional carpentry skills to create a life-size wooden Dalek. The sculpture will be auctioned next year to raise funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
Martin began his treatment for prostate cancer in 2020, and received hormone treatment and 22 rounds of radiotherapy at St James’s University Hospital. He said: “The care I received from the team at the Bexley Wing was amazing – you could see how much they wanted to help people.”
Although Martin’s cancer has sadly returned, he is pleased that his work of art will be used to fund life-saving cancer research in Yorkshire.
He said: “Research makes a big difference. I know from personal experience that even making some treatments less aggressive and easier to handle would hugely help. If funds raised from the sale of the Dalek can support research happening in Yorkshire and benefit somebody else in the future, then that’s what matters.”
