We are located on the ground floor of Jubilee Wing next door to the Adult Emergency Department at Leeds General Infirmary.
Please note – there is no Emergency Department for children under 16 at St James’s University Hospital. All children under the age of 16 who need emergency care should go to the Children’s Emergency Department at Leeds General Infirmary.
What we do
The Paediatric Emergency department is a very busy unit seeing up to 50,000 new attendances each year. We treat children up to the age 16 with conditions ranging from minor injuries to those who have life threatening illnesses and injuries.
We provide the majority of care for our patients in our Paediatric Emergency Department which includes a nurse-led triage assessment, an assessment by a clinician followed by appropriate investigations and treatment.
All patients are assessed when they arrive and those who need urgent or immediate treatment are prioritised.
As a regional major trauma centre, our Children’s Emergency Department is fully equipped and staffed to deal with the sickest and most severely injured children in the region.
The Children’s Emergency Department is located next to the Adult Emergency Department but has separate waiting areas and facilities for children and young people.

The Children’s Emergency Department is located on the Ground Floor of Jubilee Wing at Leeds General Infirmary.
Located in Leeds City Centre on Great George Street, the LGI is easily accessible by road or public transport. For maps, directions and car parking information please view our directions to the Leeds General Infirmary.
If you have been referred to the Children’s Assessment and Treatment (CAT) Unit, you can go straight to CAT Unit which is located on B Floor in Clarendon Wing at Leeds General Infirmary.

Urgent treatment centres in Leeds
An urgent treatment centre is an alternative to A&E, treating both children and adults (except those under the age of two or those over the age of 65 who have a head injury or anyone with a pregnancy related health condition). The centre provides treatment for minor injuries and illnesses that are urgent but not life or limb threatening.
For example:
- Cuts and grazes
- Sprains and strains
- Simple broken bones (if your bone is sticking out or there’s a serious wound then this should be seen at A&E)
- Wound and wound infections
- Minor burns and scalds
- Minor head injuries
- Insect and animal bites
- Minor eye injuries
- Minor back injuries
- Emergency contraception
- Skin infections/rashes/allergic reactions
- Urine infections
- Raised temperature/fever
There are currently two Urgent Treatment Centres in Leeds:
- St George’s Urgent Treatment Centre, St George’s Centre, St George’s Road, Middleton, LS10 4UZ
- Wharfedale Urgent Treatment Centre, Wharfedale Hospital, Newall Carr Road, Otley, LS21 2LY
