Supporting the Armed Forces
Leeds Teaching Hospitals is proud to support our Armed Forces and do so in a number of ways, supporting both current employees who are part of the reservists and potential employees who are currently serving or have just completed their service and are looking forward to their next career.
In August 2018 the Trust was awarded the Gold Award by the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. This shows our on-going commitment to our reservists and flexibility towards annual training commitments and mobilisation of reservist employees. This award is a credit to all our staff who use their Armed Forces experience for the benefit of our patients.
The Trust has also been accredited as Veteran Aware and was one of the first Trusts in the country to hold the accolade. This mark of distinction means that patients who have served in the UK armed forces will be cared for by frontline staff who have received training and education on their specific needs, such as around mental health, and who can signpost them to local support services.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals is one of 24 NHS bodies across the UK that has received accreditation from the Veterans Covenant Hospital Alliance. The Alliance is made up of national bodies, including NHS Improvement, NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care, the Ministry of Defence, and the Confederation of Service Charities.
Patients and visitors at Leeds Teaching Hospitals can expect to see posters that its services are ‘Veteran Aware’, such as in their clinics and public waiting areas, encouraging them to notify staff that they have served in the armed forces. This is to ensure that the armed forces community is never disadvantaged compared to other patients.
