I am a consultant in Occupational Medicine. My training was undertaken in an industrial rotation and thus I have a wide interest and experience of the effect of health on work, and the effect of work on health, in a number of different job roles and industry settings.
My main focus has been mostly on public sector workers including those in the NHS, uniformed services and local government. I have also had experience working in a range of heavy industries.
I have a wide experience of offering advice to employees and employers on the effect of work on health, as well as health on work. This includes management referral advice to employers including advice on fitness for work, adjustments to support employees and advice on the applicability of disability legislation. I offer high-level advice to organisations and employers to promote workforce health, wellbeing and safety including compliance with the legislative aspects.
I am experienced in promoting health and preventative medicine – by using work as a vehicle for this. I am experienced in undertaking health surveillance (undertaking assessments to look for the early signs of the effects of work causing ill health) for a number of health conditions including specialist assessments for Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome.
I have acted as a medical review officer – independently reviewing results of drug and alcohol testing for safety critical (high risk) roles.
My interests include applying evidence based practice to the advice offered to managers by occupational health. I am a keen educator and hold a post graduate certificate in medical education and I am a fellow of the higher education academy. I have taught as faculty on approved Faculty of Occupational Medicine Courses, for the Diploma in Occupational Medicine, and Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome.
My research has focused on the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health and wellbeing of workers in a number of industries. I have studied this longitudinally over the varying course of the pandemic, plotting this over time to match changes in wellbeing with pandemic events. Other analyses from my research focused on how working in different industries is related to psychological wellbeing, how personal vulnerability affected wellbeing and the effects of home working on mental health.
