Mr Asim Sheikh

GMC number 6096301

Primary designation:
Consultant Skullbase & Neurovascular Neurosurgeon
Department:
Neurosciences

Special interest’s: I have a sub-specialty interest in Neurovascular, Endonasal Trans-sphenoidal and minimally invasive Neurosurgery procedures.

I undertook Royal College of Surgeons of England approved Anterior Skullbase Fellowship in Leeds as well as Marjorie Newsome Fellowship at the Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, Arizona, USA with Prof M T Lawton.

I have keen interest in Minimally Invasive techniques. I also offer treatment for general degenerative diseases of Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar spine. I over see the Neurosurgical Skills lab for our trainees using simulated models for innovative teaching.

I have set up key hole surgery techniques in Leeds including key hole eye brow incision surgery, transorbital endoscopic surgery which uses keyhole techniques using a camera to remove tumours using eye socket route.

In Leeds performed UK’s first tumour excision utilising this route.

I also perform key hole microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia, image guidance use in vascular surgery and the use of intra operative Fluorescein dye for tumour and skull base surgery which enables easy visualisation of tumours from normal brain tissue.

I have been trained in treating tumours in cavernous sinus and difficult to reach skullbase areas. I have expertise in treating patients with chiari malformation and benign spinal tumours. I have developed a specialised service for treating tumours in spheno-orbital area in conjuction with maxillo-facial colleagues utilising cutting edge technologies and patient specific 3D implants for reconstruction after tumour resections.
