Jo is a Clinical Support Worker in our gynaecology team. She’s wanted to work in nursing ever since she was very young. She built up many years of experience in caring for children and adults in different community settings and these skills helped her to get a job at Leeds Teaching Hospitals where she completed a Level 2 Healthcare Apprenticeship.
Jo joined the Gynaecology team at St James’s Hospital as a Clinical Support Worker (CSW) a year ago, where she has found her ‘work family’. Jo and her CSW colleagues play a vital role in the team along with specialist nurses, doctors, and administrators. Together, they keep the Gynae service running.
Staff in the clinic are passionate about women’s health – they support patients of all ages experiencing fertility problems right through to the menopause and beyond. Every day is different for Jo and supports patients who come in for specialist treatment including colposcopies and hysteroscopies.
CSWs are often the first people patients see, so they spend time getting patients settled, reassuring them and recording their notes – and then supporting them and the other clinicians in the operating rooms. So CSWs working in this setting need to be good with people, and with specialist equipment!
Joanne’s dream is to apply for a nursing apprenticeship, and her team is supporting her to get the skills and experience so that she is ready for this. She has the opportunity to do a wide range of training to help her give the best care she can, and Jo and her colleagues live the ‘Leeds Way’ Trust values through the compassion and respect they show each other and their patients.
If this sounds like your cup of tea, and you have caring experience, lots of compassion and a willingness to learn, then come along to our open afternoon to find out more.
