Our week-long recognition of nursing — we’re proud to share stories from some of the incredible nurses who make a real difference every day.
Name: Alison
Job title: Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
How long have you been a nurse?
I have been a nurse for 14 years. I trained as a paediatric nurse and my first job was on a Special Care Baby Unit. I then went on to do my QIS Neonatal course and a further leadership course. I transferred to Leeds Teaching Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care in 2016. I then became a trainee advanced neonatal nurse practitioner in 2019, I completed a 3 years Masters degree and have worked as an advanced neonatal nurse practitioner at the Trust ever since. The learning never ends, I have just completed a leadership in advanced practice course.
What attracted you to become a nurse?
I always wanted to be a nurse, I loved the idea of being able to help people/families when they needed it most. I love the idea of working as part of a team pioneering healthcare advancements and the continuous learning aspect.
What do you love most about your job?
Everything!! I wake up every day excited to come to work. I feel honoured and so lucky to do the job I do, working as part of the most amazing team. The babies in our care surprise me daily with their resilience and strength. I always go above and beyond to ensure that everyone gets the best care and that all staff feel supported. Within my role I am able to get involved with research, QI projects, teaching, education and leadership activities, alongside the clinical aspect and skills, I love this mix.
If people are considering a career in nursing, what advice would you give them?
Absolutely go for it, you will never regret it. The hours and days may be long but the sense of reward and achievement from helping others will always out way the negatives. Within nursing and healthcare as a whole the world is your oyster (literally) there are so many opportunities and avenues to pursue. You will always be supported and will work with so many great people. Nursing is a super power not a job!
