How long have you been a nurse?
I have been a nurse nearly 30 years having qualified, registered and worked as a nurse from my home country before coming to the UK. I have been at Leeds Teaching Hospital’s for three and a half years.
What attracted you to become a nurse?
I was attracted to nursing from a young age because of the caring and compassionate nature of the career through my childhood experience as a patient in hospitals. Nurses make a difference in peoples lives through their job, looking after people with ill-health and their family.
What do you love most about your job?
What I like most about my job as a registered nurse on the Acute stroke unit is the opportunity and competence that my profession gave me to be able to care for patients and their families.
Being able to provide support and care, make a positive difference to patients’ experience by helping them to manage their daily expectations while in my care and other activities that can boost their morale always gladdens my heart.
Working in an acute ward has been an opportunity to gain experience in many aspects, no two shifts are the same, from my general nursing care of a patient and family to taking charge of the ward. These have given me avenues to work with teams of passionate healthcare staff from various multidisciplinary sectors jointly providing effective and safe care. The support of the various teams has also been a positive experience in my work place
If people are considering a career in nursing, what advice would you give them?
If you are considering a career in nursing, I would say go for it. It’s very rewarding and if you put your heart into it, let the 6Cs of nursing be your motto.
