In May, Leeds Children’s Hospital introduced ‘Ray of Sunshine’ awards for nursing colleagues. Awards recognise colleagues who consistently show an outstandingly positive attitude to work, brightening up the hospital for co-workers, patients and families.
Nominations come from colleagues across the hospital and two winners are chosen each month. Ray of Sunshine winners are presented with a certificate and badge by the Head of Nursing. Winners are also invited to an annual celebration breakfast.
Ray of Sunshine Awards have got off to a flying start with more than 30 nominations received from staff across the hospital in the first month alone.
The first two awards in May were presented to Fiona Hoggett (Clinical Nurse Specialist in Endocrinology) and Insih Baratang (Sister, Ward L40).

Fiona’s nomination stated:
‘Fiona is the most helpful and caring colleague I know. She consistently goes above and beyond, often coming in on days off or rescheduling time off to see a patient or help a colleague’
Insih’s nomination said:
‘Insih brightens up the ward on every shift she is on. She takes time to help and support all of her colleagues, and she goes the extra mile for families!’
The June awards were presented to Anna Smith (Staff Nurse, Ward L49) and Lavinia Hammerton (Children’s Pre-assessment Team).

Anna’s nomination said:
‘She always puts her patients’ needs before anything else and goes above and beyond every time. Her organisational skills have not gone unnoticed and she is an asset to the team.’
Lavinia’s colleagues said:
‘Consistently going above and beyond to provide compassionate, patient centered care, always demonstrating exceptional dedication, kindness and professionalism whilst ensuring every patient and their family feels supported, respected and valued.’
‘We’re really proud of all our winners so far and so grateful to the colleagues who have nominated them. We all know a ray of shine who brightens up our day or goes the extra mile for a patient. These awards are all about recognising those little moments that really matter to us’
Laura Whelan (Head of Nursing)
Congratulations to all Ray of Sunshine winners and thank you to everyone who has made a nomination.
