The National Audit for Care at the End of Life (NACEL) has today published patient and carer data for NHS hospitals, enabling members of the public to see key results for their local hospitals.
Access the NACEL patient and carer data toolHere in Leeds we are proud of our results, which demonstrate the high level of compassionate end-of-life care provided to patients and their loved ones in our hospitals. Our patients have access to face-to-face specialist palliative care eight hours a day, seven days a week, alongside just 67% of hospitals nationally providing this level of access.
Bereaved relatives are given the opportunity to participate in the annual NACEL bereavement survey. From those who gave their feedback in 2025, 94% at St James’s Hospital and 83% at Leeds General Infirmary rated our care as Excellent or Good.
NACEL also provides opportunities to highlight areas for improvement. Assessment of the spiritual and cultural needs of relatives has room for improvement nationally, and although our performance in this area compares favourably to national figures, we know this is an area where we could do better. Work is ongoing in this area.

Whilst we are proud to deliver a high standard of end-of-life care, we recognise that these results will not reflect every individual’s experience. We read all feedback received from bereaved relatives and we have a thorough system to ensure we learn from everyone’s experience. If you have questions or concerns about the care your loved one received, please share this via the Patient Advice and Liaison Service.
If your loved one died in one of our hospitals in 2026 and you would like to share your experiences please complete this year’s NACEL bereavement survey.
