Each month, the Trust’s Library & Knowledge Service analyses key healthcare databases to produce a report of all new publications for which one or more author is listed as a member of LTHT staff. These reports can be downloaded from the library website. So far in 2024, over 900 articles with one or more author affiliated with LTHT have been added to the key healthcare databases – a reflection of the incredible work of staff right across the Trust.
Publications from LTHT span a wide range of important topics. One key theme in recent months has been the impact of new technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, across healthcare and in research.
The recent article Development of a multi-scanner facility for data acquisition for digital pathology artiï¬cial intelligence discusses trailblazing work done by the National Pathology Imaging Cooperative. The NPIC AI FORGE provides a unique multi-scanner facility that generates comprehensive digital pathology datasets, replicating the same slides across different whole slide imaging systems.
As the impact and potential benefits of AI algorithms depend on the data that they are trained on, this facility is thereby improving the robustness and generalisability of AI algorithms in digital pathology while reducing the data requirements for training. This study describes the process of planning and building this facility, and the impacts that it will have. This detailed report highlights an example of the NPIC at Leeds Teaching Hospitals leading the way, acting as “an exemplar for other healthcare institutions globally”.
