Professor Angela Graves joined in September and is Professor in Maternal Health & Professional Education and Head of the School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds. Her research and education experiences, which have included a focus on obstetric emergencies, critical events, and enhanced maternal care, match the Trust’s focus to review its maternity and neonatal care. Angela also represents the Council of Deans of Health on the Nursing Midwifery Council Midwifery Strategic Advisory Group.
Angela has been Deputy Principal Investigator for the My First 1000 days project – a landmark early years research project in Leeds, aimed at improving health and social outcomes for families and children in the crucial first two years of life. This focus continues as a member of CHORAL (Child Health Outcomes Research at Leeds) fundraising project team, working towards improving lives and life chances for children growing up in the UK.
Angela said: “Partnerships are crucial to success, and I am proud to join the Trust to support ongoing improvement and innovation. I am passionate about collaborative working and I plan to bring independent leadership and constructive challenge to the Board, helping drive safe, effective, and personalised care, to be delivered with kindness and compassion.”
Andrew Greenwood, who will join in October, is a highly accomplished executive director with extensive experience in leading transformational change, holding roles where he has delivered strategic, commercially focused leadership. He has significant legal expertise and is currently Deputy Chief Executive at Leeds Building Society, overseeing all customer operations. He has championed diversity and inclusion initiatives, reflecting the variety of communities served by the organisation, experience he plans to bring to the Trust.
Commenting on his appointment, Andrew said: “I’ve been looking for the right opportunity that matches my skillset and I feel I can bring a great deal to Leeds Teaching Hospitals as it faces new changes and ongoing challenges. I look forward to working with the Board and wider teams to support the Trust’s mission of delivering exceptional care for patients and on expanding on innovation.”
Alongside his executive career, Andrew contributes to industry and education through roles with UK Finance and Leeds Beckett University. He also has extensive experience of affordable housing, particularly shared ownership. He is recognised as a collaborative, pragmatic leader who builds inclusive, high-performing cultures founded on trust and integrity.
Antony Kildare, Chair of Leeds Teaching Hospitals, said: This is an ideal time to welcome new people to the Board with fresh ideas, including new ways of doing things. I am delighted that Andrew and Angela have accepted to be a part of our Board as Non-Executive Directors, strengthening our skills and experience for the benefit of the staff we employ and the patients we serve.
“We face some challenging times ahead, as do all healthcare organisations, and I’m confident that with their background in different industries and corporate and commercial settings, they will help set the Trust apart in providing strong governance and strategic direction as we enter this new chapter.”
Both appointments mark a significant step forward for the Trust this autumn, with a new Chair and the recruitment of a new Chief Executive.
