Baby Basic Life Support

Choking

1. Safety

2. Encourage to cough

An adult making sure the area is safe and encouraging the baby to cough.

3. Shout for help / ring 999

An adult shouting for help before calling 999.

4. Deliver up to 5 back blows

An adult delivering up to 5 back blows.

5. If still choking Give up to 5 chest thrusts

An adult giving up to 5 chest thrusts as the baby is still choking.

6. If still choking repeat steps 4 and 5

An adult repeating steps 4 and 5 as the baby is still choking.

If the infant loses consciousness at any time, follow Baby Basic Life Support steps above from step 4

Baby Basic Life Support

1. Safety

An adult making sure the area is safe.

2. Stimulate

An adult stimulating the baby into a response.

3. Shout for help / ring 999
Use speakerphone on mobile device

An adult shouting for help before ringing 999.

4. Airway – put in ‘neutral position’

An adult putting the airway in to a ‘neutral position’.

5. Breathing – Look – Listen – Feel

An adult looking, listening and feeling for breathing.

6. If gasping or not breathing Give 5 rescue breaths

An adult giving 5 rescue breaths as the baby is gasping or not breathing.

7. If no response – Give 30 compressions to 2 breaths at 2 compressions per second.
Push down 1/3 depth of chest until help arrives or baby cries.

An adult giving 30 compressions to 2 breaths at 2 compressions per second as there is no response.
