You have had a CT scan, which involves the use of an intravenous injection of a contrast agent. There are certain precautions that should be taken because your kidney function is not within normal limits. This is to protect you from any risk of interaction between the Metformin tablets and the contrast agent, and the effects that it may have on your kidneys.
- You should not take your Metformin tablets for 48 hours following your injection of contrast agent .
- Stopping your Metformin is unlikely to make a significant difference to the control of your diabetes. Be aware of any signs and symptoms which indicate your blood sugar is off balance on the days that you are not taking Metformin.
- If you have any problems please contact your Doctor or nurse who normally treats you for your diabetes and take this leaflet with you.
When should I contact you?
If you have any concerns regarding control of your diabetes then you should contact your Diabetes Nurse Specialist.
However if you have any other concerns regarding your recent scan with contrast, you should make contact with a healthcare professional using the following details:
Radiographers (Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm)
Call and ask to speak to any of the Radiographers.
All other times
Contact either an Emergency Doctor (Walk-in Centre or A&E) or the NHS Helpline.
