What is a ventilator??
It’s a portable machine with a mask, that helps you breathe. It’s non-invasive and won’t hurt. Some people call it their BATTERY CHARGER!!
Why should I have one??…
If you’re not breathing easily you may feel tired, not eat well or get headaches…
or you could feel completely fine!!

When will I use it??
Most people use their ventilator at night, leaving it on whilst they sleep.
You might start gradually, so you can get used to it…
Or, you might start using it suddenly after a chest infection.
Before you start, you’ll get support from the Doctors, Nurses and other carers, either at home or in hospital.
So what’s so good about it??
Using a ventilator will give you more energy, give you your appetite back and stop you feeling so tired. You’ll also be less likely to have headaches!
Remember the battery charger!!

Lots of older boys use ventilators…
Once you get used to it the ventilator is a big help!
Don’t Worry! You can still do everything you normally do!
I found it difficult at first, it’s a lot easier if you relax and breathe with the
ventilator not against it…

Remember…there’s always plenty of support!
Nurses, carers, physiotherapists and Doctors are around to help, so don’t be afraid to ask.
The ventilator is portable so you can even take it on holiday!

Getting used to wearing the mask will take a while, there’s lots of types …
Some fit just inside your nose….
Others fit over your nose….
Some fit over your nose and mouth.
It’s important to find the mask that’s most comfortable for you!

Some lads find the ventilator quite noisy, especially when the alarm goes off…
The mask can sometimes leave sore points on your nose or mouth
Sometimes, air from the ventilator can blow back into your eyes.
However….these problems might not happen to you, and can be easily overcome…
Here’s an example above!!! (leaflet page reference image below)
Ear muffs for the noise, plasters for any sores and shades for the blow back!

With special thanks to….
Dr. Childs, Sue Manning, Martin Latham, Dr. Miller and the team at Martin House. And all the boys and their families!!….
