You attended the Minor Injuries Unit today with a soft tissue infection. To treat this the nurse has given you antibiotics.
If your condition does not get better, it may be turning into cellulitis which is a spreading infection of the skin normally caused by a bacteria called streptococcus.
To treat the infection
- Take the antibiotics as instructed
- If painful take painkillers regularly
- Rest and elevate affected area
- Do not remove pen mark
- Return the next day for the affected area to be reassessed
The symptoms of cellulitis to look out for are increasing
- Warmth
- Swelling
- Pain
- Red tracking lines in the affected area
- Enlarged glands (swelling in groin or armpit)
If you develop
- A high temperature or fever
- Fits
- Listlessness – Phone Urgent Care on 111 or your GP
