Why am I having a biopsy?
If you have felt a lump or a lump has been found when you have had other tests, you may need further investigations to identify what the lump is. This may include further scans and also a biopsy. A biopsy allows us to take a small sample of tissue from the lump so it can be looked at under a microscope.
I’ve had my biopsy – what next?
Once your biopsy has been taken, the sample of tissue is sent to our specialist pathology team. They perform testing on the sample in order to gain a diagnosis. Your results will be discussed in our multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, which is held each Monday. A plan will be made for your treatment at this meeting.
When will I find out my results?
The average time it takes for testing to be completed on each sample is 2-3 weeks.
How will I find out my results?
Following the MDT, a letter will be written to your GP explaining the results. You may be required to attend a clinic appointment, or you may be referred for treatment.
I’m worried – who can I speak to?
If you have any questions or concerns about your biopsy you can ring and speak to our Clinical Nurse Specialists They work Monday to Friday, 8am – 4pm.
Results will not be discussed over the phone.
