Why have I been given this information card?
This card (shown below) carries information about your implant and some contact telephone numbers. We ask you to carry it with you for three years.

Please use it to remind your GP or a doctor from another hospital should you need care, or any treatment, during this three year period. It will help other medical professionals to obtain information from us.
It is important they know about your implant.
Your next of kin should be told about the card so that they can use it in case of unforeseen illness or death. The card can be destroyed after three years.
The card will also be useful to you when travelling away from home. Many airports, seaports, other transport systems and public buildings now have radiation detectors installed. These are very sensitive and may set off an alarm if they detect your implant, even though the radiation levels are very low. You can use your card to explain why this has happened. Please feel free to invite an official to telephone St James’s University Hospital if they need any more information.
It might be useful to keep the information contained in this leaflet with you, as well as the card, if you are travelling abroad.
Please do not make copies of your card. Please contact us for a replacement card or leaflet should you need one.
