Discover our walking routes for patients

We're encouraging patients to take steps towards better health during their hospital stay, promoting physical activity to support recovery, enjoyment and wellbeing.

Our routes vary in difficulty, starting with just walking to the end of the ward, right up to a lap of the hospital site. Patients are supported to pace themselves and our nurses and physiotherapists also provide support to make sure they are fit to do the walk. We’ve also included interesting sites on our routes, such as cafés and nice outdoor spots, to make them as enjoyable as possible.

Why is walking good for us?

Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active. Research shows that walking for as little as 25 minutes a day can:

  • Improve appetite and sleep
  • Lower the risk of pressure sores
  • Positively improve mood and lift spirits
  • Help patients regain independence faster
  • Reduce the risk of further problems and readmissions
Important:

Before you start

Please talk to your nurse or physiotherapist before you start any routes to make sure you are fit, well and able to get up and about.
