The Innovative CardioRenalMetabolic Medicines Optimisation & Cardiovascular (CVD) Prevention Group (InnoMeds) is a multidisciplinary team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and nurses, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, alongside consultant physicians.
The team at the Trust champions applied research, so the findings from its extensive studies and anchor these around person-centred care, all within the Cardio-Renal-Metabolic (CaReMe) space.
In addition to treating patients directly, the team works on cardiovascular research, which has received numerous awards, and is recognised within the NHS and in the wider scientific community.
The team’s vision
A leading multidisciplinary team, disseminating best practice across sectors in cardio-renal-metabolic innovative clinical services. We deliver person centred, progressive evidence-based practice to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease through prevention, improving access to therapies and empowering self-management to improve quality of life.
A first for Leeds and region patients in the country
Research has shown that if you are living with abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, impaired fasting blood sugars and high cholesterol levels, your kidneys, liver and heart can all be affected.
When one organ is affected, it can have a knock-on effect on others. This is called the cardio-renal-metabolic syndrome. The InnoMeds team here at Leeds is one of the first in the country to assess and treat people holistically, in a more rounded way, to prevent disease progression and support people to live well.

Collaborations at the heart of the team’s work
Collaborating closely with other NHS sectors is a key part of the work of this team, (including Primary Care Networks and the Leeds Office of the Integrated Care Board in primary care and community pharmacy), University of Leeds, NHS England, Accelerated Access Collaborative, local health innovation networks and the pharmaceutical industry.
There is also regular input from a variety of patient and public groups to gain feedback on the services provided and define research for current and future needs.
Research funding has enabled the team to conduct novel research for the benefit of both the local population in Leeds and more widely across West Yorkshire and the whole UK.
