The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Breast Screening Programme
Free NHS Breast Screening for Women Aged 50 and Over in Leeds and Wakefield
The Leeds and Wakefield Breast Screening Service invites over 180,000 women in the area for breast screening. Around 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and early detection is key to saving lives.
Breast screening is carried out by female staff, and the mammogram itself only takes a few minutes. We recommend wearing a bra or skirt, as you will need to undress from the waist up. A mammogram is a special type of X-ray that examines breast tissue. While some women may find it uncomfortable, it typically only lasts for a few seconds.
Appointments are available at our screening vans or static units within the community. Your invitation and results will be sent to your home address.
Evidence shows that breast screening saves lives, so it is important to attend your appointment when you receive your invitation. If you are unable to attend, please contact the unit to reschedule.
If you’re a trans man, trans woman or are non-binary you may need to talk to your GP surgery or call the Leeds Wakefield Breast Screening Unit to ask for an appointment.
You will not automatically be invited for breast screening if you are 71 or over but you can still have breast screening every 3 years if you want to. You will need to call your local breast screening service to ask for an appointment.
