Infertility/Reversal Analysis
Infertility/reversal analysis, or semen analysis, is a microscopic examination of a semen sample to assess male fertility or to confirm the success of a vasectomy reversal. For fertility, the analysis checks sperm concentration, motility (movement), morphology (shape), and total count to identify potential male infertility factors. For reversal, the analysis verifies if sperm production has been restored in the semen.
Post Vasectomy Analysis
Post-vasectomy analysis, or PVSA (Post-Vasectomy Semen Analysis), is a laboratory test to confirm that a vasectomy was successful by checking for the presence of sperm in a patient’s semen. Patients must provide semen samples after surgery, typically after a minimum waiting period and number of ejaculations, for microscopic examination to ensure no sperm are found, allowing the surgeon to provide confirmation of the procedure’s effectiveness.
Clinical interpretation
Clinical Interpretation can be given to the referring clinician by Mr Mariano Mascarenhas (Advanced Fertility Specialist) – to arrange clinical interpretation, please contact the department via the contact details found on the Leeds Health Pathways, providing the patient’s name, D.O.B. and NHS number and preferred direct contact details for yourself (email address or contact number). Please note, clinical interpretation is not provided directly to the patient.
Please note
Mr Mariano Mascarenhas is an external GMC registered clinician who is trained, qualified and competent to give interpretation of semen analysis reports. He does not work for the Andrology Service.
Turnaround times
All semen analysis report forms are generated by the Cellular Pathology Sunquest COPATH™ System and sent to the referring clinician stated on the patient’s request form. In terms of accessing results, please note the following:
- If you are a GP within Leeds or an LTHT-based service, reports can be viewed via PPM+, ICE (ordercomms) or OpenNet. Other users will be issued a copy of GP Reports via email.
- All reports will usually be dispatched between 48 – 72 hours of the test being performed.
- Some users external to LTHT have opted out of receiving emailed reports and have taken the decision to access their reports via PPM, ICE or OpenNet. If your service falls under this category, please inform us by contacting the department via the contact details found on the Leeds Health Pathways, and we will stop emailing reports to you.
Please contact the department via email ([email protected]) if you have not received a semenology report.
