Some GI abnormalities, such as pancreatitis, perforated peptic ulcers and necrotic bowel, may allow pancreatic secretions to enter the peritoneal cavity. Peritoneal fluid can find its way into a pleural space, and therefore pancreatitis may present with pleural effusion.
