Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is released from hepatocytes in the acute phase and is the precursor of amyloid A fibrils which are found in amyloidosis (although levels are not predictive of fibril formation). Indicated in patients at risk of Amyloidosis e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis, Inherited Fever Syndromes.

The concentration of SAA in the blood rises greatly in many inflammatory diseases, for example rheumatoid arthritis. Up to 10% of individuals with sustained high SAA values may eventually develop AA amyloidosis. Interpret in conjunction with clinical history, renal function and other acute phase proteins.
