Apolipoprotein A1 is the major protein component of HDL in plasma. ApoA1 promotes cholesterol efflux from tissues to the liver for excretion, and is a co-factor for LCAT. Abnormal expression is associated with HDL deficiencies e.g. Tangier’s and ApoA1 is often used as a biomarker for prediction of cardiovascular disease.
