This test is to detect antibodies to pigeon or budgie serum using a commercial automated Fluorescent Immuno Enzyme Assay (FEIA performed on the ImmunoCAP 250 analyser). Indicated for the diagnosis of Bird Fanciers Lung or other forms of hypersensivity pneumonitis (HP) caused by inhalation of bird antigens. This test uses the Phadia ImmunoCAP system and detects IgG antibodies to pigeon serum or budgie serum, depending on the exposure indicated on the request form. Where there is exposure to other birds there is good evidence that patients with HP caused by inhalation of other bird antigens including parrots, finches, cockatiels and canaries produce cross reacting antibodies to the pigeon serum reagents.

Results are returned as mg per litre (mg/L) and range from <2.0 to >200. Levels of antibody 10mg/L or above for pigeon serum or 8.0mg/L or above for budgie serum are considered significant and suggest that the aetiology of the patients HP is inhalation of bird antigens.
