Clinical indication for testing: Suspicion of inborn error of bile salt metabolism. When the concentration of bile acids in the blood increase (due to an inborn error of bile salt metabolism or hepatobiliary disease causing disturbance of enterohepatic circulation), the bile acids are excreted in the urine. Excretion is facilitated by sulphation which increases the water solubility.
