Cholinesterase deficiency will result in prolonged paralysis after the use of muscle relaxants for surgery. Indications for requesting: prediction of susceptibility to prolonged apnoea after administration of suxamethonium or mivacurium, scoline apnoea, family studies of patients with cholinesterase deficiency, pesticide workers.

Please contact the Duty Biochemist if this test is required: 0113 39 26922 option 2. Samples should not be collected less than 12h after the administration of suxamethonium or mivacurium. If patient has been treated with fresh frozen plasma or a cholinesterase preparation, a period of at least 6 weeks should be allowed before a sample is collected.
Sample should not be taken during a suspected episode of suxamethonium prolonged apnoea, take once awake and breathing unaided.
